Portland Food Cart Directory is the most comprehensive guide to the hundreds of food carts, vans, bikes, trailers, buses and mobile eateries located around Portland.
It’s not fancy, it’s not pretty; there are no reviews, ratings, pictures or discount coupons. But it is free, easy to navigate, and most importantly, incredibly thorough — we have the details of over 300 food carts in Portland, with more being added every day.
And before you ask, here are the answers to your burning questions:
Another food cart site? Really? Why?
It’s true — there are other Portland food cart sites, directories and maps out there, but we weren’t satisfied with any of them.
Food Carts Portland does an amazing job of documenting the menus and stories of many carts, but it only lists the ones it has reviewed, can be difficult to search, and is not always up-to-date on the details of older carts.
Yelp is the go-to guide for food reviews, but it is difficult to navigate, far from comprehensive, and relies on users to keep information up-to-date and accurate.
Bing’s Food Cart Finder is quite comprehensive, but can be slow to load, annoying to navigate, gives very little information of the type of food available at many carts and, even in the few months since it launched, has struggled to stay up-to-date.
The aim of Portland Food Cart Directory is not to compete with any of these sites — hell, we encourage you to use ‘em all — but rather to condense all of the information that’s out there into incredibly simple, up-to-date listings that are easy to search and explore.
While we’re at it: here is the Portland Mercury‘s listings; Willamette Week has a “Cart of the Week” section, which is not actually weekly and not categorized, but you can find it in amongst other articles here or see their 2010 recommended carts here; The Portland Monthly magazine’s food cart guide is here; the Oregonian’s 2010 picks are here; ExtraMSG has a (somewhat outdated, but very informative) taco truck directory; and Stumptown Vegans reviews vegan and vegan-friendly carts.
The information you have for this one cart is wrong. Can I edit it?
No, but if you let us know, we can. Whether the description is inaccurate, the cart has moved, has a new website or has closed — send us an email and we’ll look into it.
My cart is listed on your site. Can I edit the details?
If the information is incorrect or incomplete, send us an email, and we will happily change it. But this isn’t the Yellow Pages — you can’t write your own advertising spruik and we’re not going to include descriptions like “The BEST sandwiches in the city!”.
Our suggestion is to start your own website (we recommend WordPress — it’s free, easy to use and ranks highly in Google searches), Facebook page and/or Twitter account. Send us the details of these pages, we will link to them, and everybody wins.
I’m starting a new food cart. How can I add it?
Either visit our Suggest a Cart page and fill in the form, or send us an email. Feel free to let us know the details ahead of time, so we can hit “publish” on the listing the day you launch.
Where are the carts’ opening hours?
For the time being, we have chosen not to include them. So many carts keep such inconsistent hours, dependent on weather, traffic, food supplies and personal lives. We think the most useful thing to do is to link to carts’ Facebook and Twitter pages, and let them keep fans informed of their hours themselves. We don’t want to be responsible for sending you out to a truck promising 2am burritos, only to find it’s shut.
We may re-evaluate this at some point.
